National Day of Mourning
The Federal Council has declared 9 January 2026 a national day of mourning. This decision follows the catastrophic fire in Crans-Montana.
On this day: A diocesan mass, open to all, will be held at St. Nicholas Cathedral in Fribourg at 18:15.
At 14:00 church bells will ring throughout Switzerland: they will first strike the hour, then ring for five minutes as a sign of communal reflection and national solidarity.
The Federal Council and the churches invite the population to dedicate this moment to the memory of the deceased, to solidarity with the injured and their loved ones, and to gratitude towards all the emergency services who are working tirelessly to overcome the crisis. These include the emergency services, medical, psychological and spiritual support specialists, and all political leaders.
